Interviewed as Use of Force Expert in Police Involved Shooting

The fatal shooting of Jakarta Jackson by a Rock Island police officer has caused protests along with calls to arrest the officer. Prior to the interview with the reporter, I reviewed seven videos of the incident along with a 18 page investigative report from the Rock Island State’s Attorneys Office.

Fortunate to be a voice of reason, even in a small way, in this tragic, yet predictable case. Here an active resister placed a police officer in a very dangerous circumstance. The suspect is now dead. The officer was subjected to full blown investigation that found he acted in accord with both federal and state law.

Surely, the controversy will not end with this investigation. Now protestors are seeking the resignation and/or removal of Rock Island State’s Attorney Dora A. Villarreal. This too is predictable.

Not sure that the reporter wanted to hear this, but I stressed that this tragedy could have been avoided had the suspect cooperated with the officer. Predictably, this was not included in the media piece. If only, the activists, reporters, and our “leaders” spent even a fraction of time making this crucial point, we would avoid the vast percentage of officer involved shootings.
